Single-stage hydraulically driven gas booster for powerful pressure augmentation

Hydraulic pressure boosting of gas in demanding environments

A single-stage hydraulically driven gas booster is used to increase gas pressure in industrial systems where high forces, stable operation, and precise control are essential. By using hydraulics as the power source, pressure boosting is enabled even in applications where air drive is not suitable or where the process requires continuous and controlled operation.

Hydraulically driven gas boosters are primarily used for higher power requirements, typically above approximately 7 kW, where air-driven solutions are insufficient.

Hydmos Industriteknik supplies hydraulically driven gas boosters for industrial environments where reliability and safe separation between the drive medium and the gas are fundamental prerequisites.

When a single-stage gas booster is the right choice

Single-stage hydraulically driven gas boosters are suitable for applications where the pressure increase is clearly defined and where the ratio between inlet and outlet pressure is limited to 1:6.

The solution requires a hydraulic system adapted for the desired operation. Hydmos provides such customized systems. Hydraulic drives enable high power output as well as good controllability.

Double-acting gas boosters

Haskel's single-stage boosters are always double-acting, which means a larger and steadier flow, but also that the output pressure depends on the incoming gas pressure. Note that the incoming pressure must be at least approx. 7 bar since the gas piston is not fixed to the piston rod. The incoming gas pushes the piston back against the piston rod. In this way, the piston can more easily find its center in the gas tube and thereby keep wear on the seal to a minimum.

For larger pressure differences, multiple gas boosters can be combined or integrated into more advanced system solutions to achieve the desired final pressure without increasing the complexity of each individual unit.

How hydraulically driven gas boosters operate

Hydraulic drive and functional principle

The hydraulic drive provides the gas booster with a smooth and controlled movement, which contributes to stable pressure buildup and good repeatability. By controlling the hydraulic drive pressure, the gas pressure can be regulated with high precision and good control over capacity and final pressure.

The functional principle corresponds to that of air-driven gas boosters, where a slowly moving piston pumps the gas, and with the help of check valves, the gas flow is controlled during the piston's reciprocating movement. One difference is that the switching function is not built-in; instead, it occurs via an external hydraulic and control system. Just like for air-driven boosters, the inlet pressure can be equal to the maximum output pressure.

Hydmos builds hydraulic and control systems tailored for these gas boosters and their operating conditions.

For harsh environments

Design adapted for industrial operation

Single-stage hydraulically driven gas boosters are designed for long-term operation in demanding industrial environments. The design is robust and contains few moving parts, which reduces wear and contributes to a low maintenance level.

The separation between the drive section and the gas section is based on the same principle as in air-driven gas boosters. Between the hydraulics and the gas, there are three seals, with the two intervening spaces vented to the atmosphere.

This design makes it possible to detect potential leaks and prevents the drive medium and gas from mixing.

Thermal and Pressure Management

The gas is cooled using a jacketed tube surrounding the gas section. Hydraulic oil or another fluid is used as the cooling medium, depending on the system design and operating conditions. Hydraulically driven gas boosters from Haskel are engineered to handle these conditions and perform reliably even at high pressures and during continuous operation.

Handling Various Gases

Hydraulically driven gas boosters can be adapted for various industrial gases, depending on the configuration and choice of materials. The choice of gas affects factors such as the design, seals, and other components within the booster. Gases with specific requirements therefore demand customized solutions that account for both safety and operating conditions.
