Water hydraulics have evolved to a level where it is now possible to build systems functionally comparable to conventional hydraulic systems. At HYDMOS Industriteknik, we offer components and system solutions for water hydraulics that cover most technical requirements.
Our product range includes directional control valves, proportional valves, flow dividers, pilot-operated check valves, pressure-regulating valves, pressure-compensated flow control valves, and variable pumps. Together, these enable the construction of complete water hydraulic systems.
Water hydraulic systems from HYDMOS operate on pure water. No additives are used, except when frost protection is required. At low temperatures, propylene glycol, for example, can be added following a technical assessment.
Selected materials
Since water lacks lubricating properties, specific demands are placed on material selection. This is managed by using plastic and stainless steel in components where moving surfaces interact. In these cases, one surface is made of plastic and the other of stainless steel.
The absence of a lubricating film means that the same clearances are not required as in oil-based systems. This gives water hydraulic components high volumetric efficiency and consequently reduced internal leakage. A clear example of this is directional control valves for water hydraulics.
Increased safety and environmental sustainability
Water hydraulics offer several advantages compared to oil-based hydraulics. The environmental aspect is clear, as oil is hazardous to the environment, whereas water—even with antifreeze additives—is not.
Other advantages include reduced fire risk, which in some cases can positively affect insurance costs. Because the systems do not leak oil, they also meet requirements specific to certain industrial processes. Water is less compressible than oil, enabling faster control systems.
In some solutions, water is used not only as an energy carrier but also for humidification, fire suppression, or similar functions. In certain cases, the return line can also be omitted, provided there is an ample supply of water.
Long service life
Water hydraulic systems from HYDMOS are currently used up to 160 bar continuously. With proper filtration, a water hydraulic system has a service life comparable to that of a conventional hydraulic system.
However, for operations exceeding 160 bar, service life is significantly reduced, which must be taken into account during system dimensioning.
Tailor-made water hydraulics
Cylinders for water hydraulics are manufactured in stainless steel SS316 and feature a tie-rod design in sizes ranging from D32 to D100. Various mounting options are available, such as rod eyes, front and rear flanges, and clevises.
The tie-rod design contains no welds, which minimizes the risk of corrosion and provides a robust construction that is also easy to service during operations such as seal replacement.
At HYDMOS, we offer axial piston pumps for water hydraulics that are completely oil-free and can be operated on tap water or seawater. No additive lubrication is required.
The pumps are manufactured with a slight oversize on the pistons to allow them to run in during the first operating hours. The internal leakage that occurs is used for cooling and protecting the plastic material.
For pumps intended for operation with a glycol mixture, this must be specified when ordering, as the oversize of the pistons is adjusted accordingly.
The pumps are available in versions for self-priming operation and for pressurized inlets. Versions with a pressurized inlet can be operated in both directions and are equipped with a drain line that must be connected to the tank.
Self-priming pumps do not have a drain line. The suction line must be dimensioned one size larger than in corresponding oil hydraulic systems.
The normal operating range of the pumps is between 2 and 50 degrees Celsius. At lower temperatures, antifreeze additives are required. Higher temperatures are possible following technical evaluation.
All water supplied to the pumps must be filtered to at least 25 micrometers with beta 10 = 75. Return filters are recommended for closed systems.
Valves for water hydraulics are used to control flow and pressure in systems operating with water as the pressure medium. Our product range includes directional control valves, proportional valves, and pressure control valves, adapted for both tap water and salt water.
Directional control valves for water hydraulics are intended for tap water or salt water and have lower internal leakage than conventional hydraulic valves. The flow is controlled by a moving disc actuated by electric, pneumatic, or mechanical means.
Once the disc reaches its position, it is pressurized by the medium and seals against the other channels. The valves are available in 4/3, 4/2, and 3/2 configurations, for both in-line mounting and subplate mounting.
Proportional valves for water hydraulics are of the spool type and control the flow via a solenoid. Pressure relief valves are available for in-line mounting and subplate mounting with pressure ranges up to 160 bar.

High maximum output pressure
Hydraulically driven liquid pumps operate on the same fundamental principle as other hydraulic components. Hydraulic pressure is utilized to displace fluid via a piston, delivering precisely regulated fluid pressure.
The hydraulic system can generate higher pressures than air-driven alternatives, which is often required for applications involving heavy loads or extended duty cycles. A properly dimensioned pump ensures a stable flow over time and contributes to the overall reliability of the system.
With over 30 years of industry experience in hydraulic systems, pressure test equipment, and gas installations, we deliver products of the highest quality. Please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will help you build a system tailored to your specific operations.
